New Year’s Eve weather forecast: Expect warm temps, but biting winds for NYC ball drop.

Those cold and dreary rain showers that have been pestering our region Monday morning will finally taper off Monday night, paving the way for a mostly dry New Year’s Eve in New York City and New Jersey.

However, New Year revelers who plan to flock to Times Square on Tuesday to ring in 2020 should prepare for cold wind-chill readings throughout the afternoon and night, when the giant crystal ball will drop.

Forecasters from the National Weather Service and AccuWeather say the air temperature will climb into the upper 40s during the day on New Year’s Eve — about 8 to 10 degrees warmer than normal for Dec. 31. But it will feel much colder because strong westerly winds will blow steadily from 7 to 13 mph and gusting up to 25 mph under mostly cloudy skies that will gradually become sunny.

Winds will get a bit calmer Tuesday night, but they still will be blowing steadily between 11 and 15 mph, making it feel like it’s about 30 degrees.

People flocking to Times Square in New York City to celebrate New Year's Eve will face a chilly, windy night.
